Roger Behnken needs our support. His short-term memory has slowly been going away for years. He no longer drives or lives completely on his own.
Currently, he resides in a care facility in Walnut Creek, which, at $7000 per month, is rapidly depleting his very modest savings and depriving him of all the independence and other pleasures that are his essence.
A team of Rogers friends is exploring the possibility that, with the right amenities, technology, and support, he might be able to live safely once again on his beloved boat, which has been his home for over 25 years, and where he feels most at ease.
Given Roger’s dementia, we know this solution is time-limited, but we hope to help him enjoy the life he loves while he still can. (Meanwhile, his family is working tirelessly to secure long-term MediCal funding for the skilled nursing he will surely need eventually.)
Roger’s ready smile, warm hugs, generosity, and sense of fun have graced us all for many years. It is time for us to step up for him.
