(2021) Roehms to World Wife Carrying Championship!

Update 1/15/21: We plan to attend this year's World Wife Carrying Competition in Finland and have our travel plans booked! We will be watching to see if the event goes on as planned this year. We're very excited and grateful for all your generosity and support!

Update 3/29/20: 2020 World Wife Carrying Competition has been canceled due to the uncertainty around Covid-19. They will be holding the event again during the summer of 2021, and we do plan on attending.

Yep, its just what it sounds like....

Help us get to Finland so we can wife carry for the World Championship!

A few years ago, we discovered that wife carrying was a sport. We thought, "okay, why not?" We competed for the first time in October 2019 at the North American Championship event at Sunday River Ski Resort in Maine , and (unbelievably!) ended up winning the competition!

As the 2019 North American Wife Carrying Champions (story here) , we've earned a spot to compete in the World Championship Competition in Finland during July 2021 (2020 event canceled due to Covid-19).

We would absolutely love to continue the fun and represent the United States and Canada in Finland; we have our sights on hopefully being the first North American couple to win the prestigious title of Wife Carrying World Champs!

However, as millennials in our mid-20s and with Jerome in graduate school earning a PhD in Math, we need help to get across the pond to compete. We'd love to have your support for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Please see more info below on our experience of wife carrying, our training plans for Finland, a video of our races in Maine, and some personal notes.

We'd be happy to share more on the experience with you, so feel free to reach us at the emails below. And of course, we welcome all forms of support and appreciate any advice/encouragement/cheering/love/well wishes and positive vibes!Thank you!

We are beyond excited and blessed to have the opportunity to compete on the world stage. Olivia and I trained together for the North American championship by going to a local park and running laps around a soccer field with her on my back. We received some very strange looks from the other folks at the park! Heading into the world championships we want to step it up several notches by running up and down hills and jumping in and out of pools. We hope to make the USA, Canada, Kansas, Ontario, Delaware, and Benedictine College proud over in Europe next summer!

It has been so fun finding this awesome activity for Jerome and I to participate in. With Jerome at 6'6" and I at 5'2", we haven't found many opportunities to compete together - but we seem to be perfectly built for this kind of competition and we've enjoyed participating so far! While we first entered just for the fun of it, we still naturally thrived on the competition aspect and are so excited to attempt the next level. We can't wait to rep North America and make you all proud!

Website for the World Wife Carrying Competition
Location: the competition is set in Sonkajärvi, Finland , about 6 hours drive north of Helsinki, Finland.
Dates: Summer 2021
Other events: A full festival of events is planned each year; 2019's festival included a Wife Carrying Sprint and a Wife Carrying team event (relay where the 'wife' is the baton)!

-Running up and down hills
-Jumping in and wading out of pools
-Vaulting fences
-Eating clean
-Core work (especially for Olivia as the upside-down human backpack)
-Sprinting for Jerome and Long-distance running for Olivia
Any suggestions? :)

Should you think this is hilarious enough to want to really see us do this, please donate! Funds donated will be used for transportation, entry fees, lodging, and yummy souvenirs for you all (but we may get hungry on the way home and eat those...). We are hoping to be able to cover most, if not all, expenses through the help of generous sponsors.

*whispers* Anyone know any Nike or Under Armor reps who might want to get in on early sponsorship of the newest, hottest athletes? ;)

We hope to be able to acknowledge sponsors on our trip - if you'd like us to promote a personal or business brand, we are open to the conversation!

We are so grateful for your support!
