Rocky is down to 2 good legs! Help him get back on 4 paws!

When Rocky was surrendered to BTTR we thought this sweet senior would be a fast adoption. He had just been neutered at 10 years old and was so excited to be out enjoying playing on all our fenced in fields, napping in the sun or a cozy dog bed, and just being a beagle. But then suddenly he started limping and struggling to get up the day before meeting with his potential adopter. Our vet determined that he has torn the CCL (like a ACL in dogs) on both his right and left hind legs. This leaves him putting most of his weight on his front legs when he walks. He limps on his right hind leg and struggles to stand even with pain meds (see photos). Our vet believes the left one was torn prior to surrender and partially healed and the right tore with the increased exercise of having land to run on and friends to play with.

Rocky’s original owner abandoned him with a Friend who agreed to watch him for a few weeks while his owner was looking for a new place to live in another state. After a few months his owner said he didn’t want Rocky back and the Friend called BTTR for help. The Friend was doing her best to care for Rocky but he wasn’t happy living in an apartment and she was hoping to find a rescue familiar with the breed and a beagles wants and needs. Rocky is looking for a very special foster or adopter More About Fostering/Adopting Rocky

Rocky is a very healthy active guy, his bloodwork looks amazing, he isn’t overweight, he is heartworm negative, and he wants to run and play despite his injury. He has been evaluated by two orthopedic specialists who have determined that he is an excellent candidate for a bilateral extracapsular lateral suture stabilization (ELSS) See photo of example. What that means is using a very strong suture to stabilize both of his knees so he can walk pain free and return to his active lifestyle. We are also looking to remove a small growth from his eyelid that is rubbing and causing some irritation at the same time.

We have collected several quotes for his surgery ranging from $3100-$4600 in addition to the $950 for neuter, vaccines, heartworm/tick borne illness test, full blood panel, urinalysis, fecal test, deworming, 2 Ortho exams, pain medication until surgery, and 9 months of heartworm/flea/tick prevention.

We have him scheduled for surgery at Edinburgh Animal Hospital in Chesapeake, Virginia on April 1, 2025. The quote is for $3139.01 and includes repairing both torn CCLs removing the small eye growth (only $125 of the quote), post op pain meds, and post op laser therapy to reduce swelling and pain. We are hoping to fundraise to help cover his expenses BTTR does NOT pass on these fees to adopters and charges a reduced adoption fee for senior dogs. BTTR is 100% volunteer run, we receive no federal/state funding and rely solely on donations. You can view copies of his quotes and get more information about what is involved in his surgery on our website. More About Rocky's Bills/Surgery Info
