Help us restore the floors! A charming and unique piece of local history for Barrow and Jackson counties is the Rockwell Universalist Church building. The hope is to preserve this local and unique piece of history - the building - for future generations of Barrow and Jackson county.
The Rockwell Church building (link to historical marker information and hrcga.org link )is in need of repair in order to keep the building intact for future generations. The original joist system and flooring system is currently failing and needs replacing. This is a great cost that there are currently not adequate funds for and the hope is that the local community will assist and support the effort in keeping the building around for another hundred and forty years.
Rockwell Church was first organized in 1839 near its current location. The present building was built in 1881. It is the second oldest Universalist Church in Georgia and one of only a few of Universalist churches to exist in Georgia. The Rockwell Church building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1985. The building was deemed architecturally significant as a good example of its type of post-Civil War rural churches, being a one-room wood frame church with no ornamentation and Greek Revival styling.
Money raised and donated will go towards replacing the flooring system of the building and additional required building repairs as necessary.
Donor appreciation gifts will be available (quantities limited) from Holt Etheridge. A wonderful piece of local history is available: A quantity of prints of "Fort Yargo" (c) 1975 by James R. Darnell was acquired from a local estate sale. The original painting was commissioned by The Peoples Bank and then a limited edition print run of 990 was produced. The prints are signed and numbered. The image size is 16"x20" with an overall size of 19"x23". Only local pickup/delivery available due to print/frame size. Shipping will be available at your additional cost.
