For 16 years, Mark Boston, who is widely revered by music fans worldwide as “Rockette Morton,” the legendary bassist for Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band, has lived on a farm in Oregon owned by one of his closest friends who subsidized the majority of his rent and utilities during this time. This friend sadly passed away recently and his heirs now require Rockette to move out by September 21st, 2026, plunging him into an immediate, devastating housing crisis.

Rockette is 77 years old. He has no savings and lives off $1,000 a month in SS and SSI. Today he faces severe, overlapping health struggles that limit his daily life. Mark is disabled and has been managing:

While in the band he became infamous for his aggressive, jaw-dropping bass work and his unforgettable stage presence on one of the most influential and significant albums of all time, Trout Mask Replica. Sadly, Rockette and the Magic Band members fell victim to music industry exploitation and made very little money from their time in the band across various albums and tours.

Rockette’s story with the band began as a teenager. A self-described "country bumpkin" raised on country and western and early rock 'n' roll, he fell hard for Captain Beefheart's sound after hearing the album Safe as Milk — he wore the record out, falling asleep to it night after night. When Don Van Vliet finally called him up and asked, "You got a white shirt?" — band code for an invitation to join — Rockette was only 19 years old.

His shot at joining the Magic Band came almost by accident, after another bassist decided against a full-time role. Rockette had expected to play straightforward blues; instead he was handed the radically experimental songs that would become Trout Mask Replica. He was the only one who could stumble all the way through "Steal Softly Thru Snow," and that was enough to get him the job. He took the stage name Rockette Morton and developed a playing style that was entirely his own — using three metal fingerpicks together with a standard flatpick, an approach so aggressive it gouged the wood of his bass around the pickup mounts. Music historians have noted that his technique had no real precedent in rock bass history.

Rockette went on to anchor the band through its most celebrated run, playing on Trout Mask Replica (1969), Lick My Decals Off, Baby (1970), The Spotlight Kid (1972), Clear Spot (1973) and Unconditionally Guaranteed (1974) — albums now considered among the most groundbreaking in rock history. In 1974, after mounting tensions with Van Vliet, Rockette left the Magic Band along with bandmates Bill Harkleroad and Art Tripp to form their own group, Mallard, releasing two albums before Mark largely stepped out of the public eye.

He resurfaced in 2003, reuniting with former Magic Band members for a world tour performing Captain Beefheart's music — a partnership that has continued with a mix of various musicians for a few years. He also released a solo album, Love Space, and ran a small home recording studio he called "Bomark." Asked once to describe the music that made him famous, Mark put it simply: it was "like bluegrass, only weirder."

Rockette cannot afford any housing and utilities and still have enough money for other necessities so I am hoping all his worldwide fans and friends will show their love and appreciation for him and donate to get Rockette into a new rental home and help cover his basic living needs and other services.

Rockette will be the beneficiary of all funds from this campaign which will go to an established third-party trust that has been set up, with a trustee that will pay all bills for him. The purpose of this trust is to supplement, not supplant, his public benefits so he can keep them. In order for Rockette to get accepted as a tenant in a rental, the trustee of the trust will apply for the rental and show landlords that there is enough savings in the trust to assure them that Rockette will be a reliable tenant.
