Robyn was diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer on March 16th 2016. She underwent three operations before completeing 23 weeks of Chemotherapy at Ballarat Hospital. The surgery was successful, but caused Lymphedema in her left arm, requiring her to wear a pressure sleeve at all times. The chemo treatments meant a 45 minute drive to Ballarat every week, and the side effects included nausea and complete hair loss. It was during this time she was also diagnosed with a heart condition, requiring her doctors to stop the stronger chemo treatments. In December she had to travel to Ballarat every day for daily Radiation Therapy that left her with second degree burns. Robyn officially finished her cancer treatment on December 23rd 2016. Robyn's heart condition will require ongoing medicationa and treament, and the Lymphedema in her arm requires a new pressure sleeve every 6 months.
Just a few months later, and one year to day from Robyn's Breast Cancer diagnosis, Robyn's husband Ian was diagnosed with APML Leukaemia on March 16th 2017. He was immediately transferred to the Olivia Newton John Cancer Centre for daily chemotherapy treatments for six weeks. He had no immune system so during his stay he was isolated in a special "bubble" ward. Travelling from Bacchus Marsh to Heidelberg was difficult, so visitation limited, the family depending on lifts from friends and public transport to see him during his treatment. He is currently resting at home before going back for a second round of daily chemotherapy, staying at the Medi-Hotel and travelling home for weekends.
In has been out of work for 6+ years due to other medical issues, and being a one-wage household, finances are now pushed to the limits, with both of them needing numerous ongoing medications and medical needs, specialist appointments, and the contast travelling expenses. Both have been diagnosed with other secondary medical conditions, and emergency room visits are not uncommon.
