Help Robin with the resources to defeat cancer
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Anita and I’m fundraising to help my beautiful daughter-in-law with expenses so that she can concentrate on defeating breast cancer instead of on how she’s going to pay her co-pays, and put food on the table for her family. In just the 4 weeks since her diagnosis she has out of pocket expenses over $2000.00 for co-pays, gas to drive an hour and a half one way to the hospital, parking, etc. This doesn’t count loss of wages. Robin and her husband Don, who is in need of a kidney transplant and is disabled, have two beautiful children aged 15 and 13 years old. Robin is the sole provider. She will not be able to work continuously due to side effects after some of the treatments as well as recovery after surgery. She will need time to recover mentally and physically. They need your help so that Robin can concentrate on battling this cancer which is even further complicated due to existing Rheumatoid Arthritis, instead of worrying how they are going to pay co-pays for treatment, oncologist co-pays, doctor co-pays, and provide food, shelter, gas and electric etc. for their family. Below in the bold font is the beginning of Robin’s story in her own words.
I’ve been holding off on posting this until we had a plan in place and I knew more. On April 5th, after my yearly scan, I had a diagnostic mammogram and same day ultrasound and breast biopsy for two suspicious masses. The next night I got the call that one was fine, but the other was breast cancer.
It has been a whirlwind of scary sleepless nights and days waiting, tests, doctor’s appointments, having tough conversations, and wrapping my head around this. I am happy to say I have a great team at Duke and an amazing supportive family (these kids of mine and The Hubs especially; they are freaking unbelievable), friends, and coworkers.
I’ve gotten my port placed and all my scans and cardiac echo are done, I’ve met with the radiation oncologist, medical oncologist, and surgical oncologist, therapist, etc, and I’m ready to take this on! Thankfully there is none anywhere else on my scans and there are targeted medications for my type (er+, pr+, and Her2+) invasive ductal adenocarcinoma. I also just found out through genetic testing that I don’t have any genetic contributions to my cancer - very good news! I am set to begin chemo on May 8th for 6 cycles (every three weeks) and then probably surgery. After that, more chemo for a year and possibly radiation and reconstruction. Since I am the only one who works outside the home for my family, I will continue to work through this as long as possible.
It looks like we caught it fairly early and so in a lot of ways I’m very lucky. I’ve been so humbled by the support and love I’ve received and I know this will be hard, but I can do hard things! It’s time for me to kick cancer’s ass.
All this to say, I love you all, and I want all my ladies to go get checked!
