At just 10 years old, my brother Robert Kris began his battle with central nervous system lymphoma. After years of missing baseball games, birthday parties, and middle school dances, he kicked cancer’s butt! He came out the other side with medical debt that followed him into adulthood, but all that mattered was that he made it to adulthood.

Years passed. His sister (that’s me) even got a tattoo in his honor (sorry, Mom and Dad). We all thought his battles were behind us for good.

Now here we are, on the cusp of Robert’s 32nd birthday. After multiple MRIs, EEGs, blood tests, and what felt like trips to every doctor in Delaware, we still had no answers for why Robert was having trouble walking. As his symptoms worsened, he checked into the hospital, and finally, the doctors found the cause: Hydrocephalus due to a cyst on his brain, in the same location where his cancer once was.

So once again, Robert spent his birthday in the hospital.

What amazes everyone who knows him is his unshakable positivity and sense of humor. No matter what he’s facing, Robert is the kind of person who, if his leg were on fire, would still say, “I’m fine. How are you?”

The doctors will soon perform brain surgery to remove the cyst, and once again, Robert faces mounting medical bills. All while, trying to secure short-term disability from work so he doesn’t lose the job he loves.
