In 2013 Roberto was diagnosed with astrocytoma, a form of glioma tumor that originates in the astrocytes (star shaped cells in the brain). He had been experiencing piercing headaches, finally went to the ER and received the terrible news. He was transferred to Cedar Sinai where underwent treatment. The endless pokes for IV's and blood draws, CT scans, MRI, many nights spent in the hospital away from his wife and four kids. He has undergone 3 major surgeries to resect the tumor though unseccessful in total resection. Radiation, chemo, pills, infusions to shrink the tumor have kept it under control. However the side affects, as we all know, are sometimes worse then what the tumor itself causes. In the interim he has been out of work, fighting to keep his job and his benefits in order to continue fighting this terrible battle. He is a Registered Nurse on the telemetry unit at St John's Hospital, and he is one of the biggest assets to the unit he works on. He is the one who never gets upset. He always has a smile on his face, always ready and willing to help! I remember asking him about cardiac rhythms one day and he starts going into so much depth I thought my head was going to explode. He is so full of knowledge, passion for his job and love for his patients, it resonates through everyone he comes into contact with. It's been two years battling to get healthy enough to go back to work to make money, losing his benefits and having to pay cash for his chemo, radiation and other treatments and meds. Not to mention trying to provide and raise his family.
He has only been back to work for a couple months now, still not even close to being back on his feet, and we find out his tumor has grown and he will have to undergo yet another surgery. All this right around the holidays.
I just want to give him some peace of mind through all of this.
For once I want him to be taken care of like he has done for every single patient he has ever cared for. So please, help me help him, his family and their well being during this time. Every little bit helps
