Roberta (Berta) Tipungwuti has the world at her feet as a young 17 year old from the Tiwi Islands who was always actively involved in sports, especially Aussie rules. On most weekends she went hunting with her parents Brian Tipungwuti and Karlene Scrymgour. Roberta is the oldest of 4 with three younger siblings, Shenae, Macrina and brother Terence. Roberta has a beautiful daughter name Kearny.
Roberta has been in hospital since March and around the 26/4/19 was diagnosed with Aplastic Anaemia, which means she has no bone marrow and unable to fight infections. Since going into hospital, Roberta has been receiving transfusions to replenish red blood cells, which is a temporary solution.
It has been devastating for her parents, Brian and Karlene to see their little girl extremely unwell. The whole Tiwi Islands community is in shock and pray and hope that Roberta gets well soon and returns to her school mates, the Tiwi Islands and large Tiwi family.
The specialist at Royal Darwin Hospital and the senior ICU doctor and his team are working frantically to find suitable donors around Australia. In Sydney white cells matched for Roberta were immediately flown up Friday arriving early Saturday morning and administered immediately. After receiving the first batch of white blood cells work its wonderful miracle and her oxygen levels lowered for the first time in many days. Giving much hope to both her parents and her large extended family.
The Go Fund Me Account is in place to raise urgent funds to assist Karlene and Brian to meet medical, travel, accommodation and meals. The funds will enable both her parents and siblings to stay close by the hospital.
Something special to share is her love of AFL. Roberta and her entire family are all avid and one eyed loyal West Coast Eagles supporters. Her love for AFL Club West Coast Eagles, is strong and proud. When West Coast Eagles won the premiership, Roberta and her family celebrated together and with other Eagles supporters here on the island.
Last year West Coast Eagles premiership players Willy Rioli and Liam Ryan and coach Adam Simpson travelled to the Tiwi Islands bringing with them the premiership cup. The photo shot below shows jubilant Roberta with Willy Rioli, her brother Terence and sister Shanae and other family members.
A recent video recording from Josh Kennedy is evident of West Coast Eagles response when hearing of Roberta’s current medical situation, sending words of encouragement and best wishes from him and the club. The family is extremely appreciative of his time and kind words.
We know how generous Australians are; Karlene and Brian need your support so they can be with their daughter as she will be away from her community for many months in hospital.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story about Roberta and thank you for your kind donation to the Roberta Tipungwuti GoFundMe Account.
