Robert Schmidt's Road to Recovery

Donation protected

On Thursday evening, July 25th Rob Schmidt was in a horrible hit and run motorcycle accident. A drunk driver turned left in front of him; The driver abandoned the car and fled on foot. The police found open alcohol in his car.
Rob arrived to the hospital with multiple broken ribs, punctured lung, torn spleen and broken tibia and fibia (apparently one of the worst they have seen). There is concern with his foot as he has damage to his arteries and veins in his leg so the blood flow is not circulating well to his foot and toes. This causes a risk of him potentially losing his foot or toes.
Rob was in surgery on Friday for 6 hours. He was operated on by both the orthopedic and vascular teams. They inserted a tibia rod to fix the bone that was broken in 4 pieces. His leg was crushed so he had extensive artery damage and they needed to release the pressure from the muscle to save the muscle from dying. Currently his muscle is protruding through an open wound in his leg which will need to be operated on again likely tomorrow. They will try to put the muscle back in his leg but if they are not able to do this he will need to have plastic surgery later this week to close the wound and skin graft it. They repaired a blood vessel in his foot which was causing blood circulation from making its way to his foot. So when he was brought in his foot was blue and had no pulse. There was fear that he would lose his foot completely. But they have been able to get a pulse back which is good news. It needs to be continuously monitored to ensure the pulse stays strong or he could still lose it. The loss of blood flow causes changes in the molecules in the blood and this may have hurt his kidneys. The bone may not heal if it doesn’t he will need more surgery and he may still lose his leg if there are further complications. He has lost a lot of blood from both the drainage tube on his leg due to the open would and he also still has a bleeding spleen so they are monitoring his hemoglobin to see if he will need a transfusion or spleen removal. He’s in ICU and sleeping on and off.
This is the most genuine, loving, caring and giving family I have ever met. They are in need of support during this difficult time in their lives. This accident has changed their lives, it is going to be a long journey; one they will conquer. They are very deserving of all of the support we can give them.

My hopes are that this GoFundMe will help ease some worry for the family during this difficult time.

We truly appreciate any and all donations. I know this help will bring much relief to the Schmidt family.
