Robert Gaynor Memorial

For many of us, Sunrise Little League has always meant more than just youth baseball; it is a community where we volunteer, spend much of our time together and form lifelong friendships. Recently, a very special family in our community was struck by a tragedy that has devastated us all.

On Saturday, January 9th, Robert Gaynor, the 14-year-old son of Ken and Jeanne Gaynor, tragically lost his life in an accident doing one of the things that he loved most, riding his dirt bike with his family.

Robert graduated out of Sunrise in 2018, after eight seasons in the league. Like many of our daughters and sons, Robert’s second home was Sunrise and he was well known as an all-around great kid. For many years, Robert and his family have been stalwart supporters of Sunrise, building connections between our league members and helping create our wonderful community.

Ken, Jeanne and the rest of the Gaynor family are grateful for all the people who have reached out to them to share their condolences. Friends naturally want to offer some degree of comfort during this time of heartbreaking grief; while the Gaynors desire nothing from us but love and emotional support for their family, they have given their blessing for Sunrise to honor Robert.

To that end, the Sunrise Board of Directors and our community wish to pay tribute to Robert in two ways. First, Sunrise will establish the Robert Gaynor Memorial Scholarship – an award that will, in perpetuity, provide the registration fees for a deserving child each spring season.

Second, we intend to rename Field 2 to “Robert Gaynor Field.” If sufficient funds are raised through this effort, we plan to install a new scoreboard on Field 2 that will include its designation as “Robert Gaynor Field.”

If you and your family are interested in being part of this effort to permanently remember Robert, you are invited to donate via the Sunrise Venmo account at @sunrisebb or through this GoFundMe page.

Since Sunrise is exempt from taxation under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, any contribution you make on behalf of Robert will be fully tax deductible (our Federal Tax ID is 95-6111901). Since the IRS requires documentation for donations of $250 or more, send a request via the contact button below if you would like a letter documenting your donation of at least $250. We also encourage you to check with your company to see if it offers a matching charitable donation program.

Today, Ken, Jeanne and their entire family are in our hearts and, through these two initiatives, we forever intend to remember Robert as a part of the Sunrise baseball community.
