Robert Eddie ‘Captain Eddie’ Hodgens (best known as ‘Cappy’ and ‘Big Ed’ to those who knew him best) was born on June 7, 1948, in Greenville, SC - and passed peacefully in his sleep during the early morning hours of September 29th, 2022, with his family close by, after a long illness.
Things he loved and enjoyed, in no particular order and certainly not limited to, were: his country (having served honorably in the USMC); the USC Gamecocks (graduating class of 1972); health & fitness (having finished the Iron Man, a participant in the Bike Ride Across GA, and countless 5 & 10k races, marathons, and triathlons); dancing (especially the Carolina shag); fashion and apparel (having an accomplished career in sales for over 42 years); cooking and grilling great food (and he was a fantastic cook); and an incredible community of friends (who loved him in ways as BIG as his personality).
Cappy is survived by his wife, Beth Hodgens of Panama City, FL; his younger sister, Donna H. Spearman of SC; his son, Pierson Hodgens of Buffalo, WY; and his daughter Lauren-Summers Gramm of Albany, GA - and their spouses. Cappy also loved his seven grandchildren (ages 4 to 13) - graciously sharing his love of fishing and being out on the water. In his famous (and wise) fisherman way, Cappy would remind all of his water-loving friends, “[I love you all, and until I see you again], keep your bait wigglin’.”
A Celebration of Life will be held at Landmark Condominiums’ clubhouse, Panama City, FL, on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2022, from 2 - 4 pm.
Instead of flowers, donate towards a Memorial Reef to be placed in the Gulf of Mexico - honoring Cappy’s life - and creating a place for his family and friends to enjoy for years to come.
