They say it takes a village…
I guess I never fully understood that adage until I left Old Forge, Pennsylvania. I’ve had the opportunity to live in various cities, states, and tiny towns all across our great nation, and I’ve realized over time how unique and special Old Forge really is. That village shaped a lot us us, especially so for us that grew up free range in the 80s and 90s. We, together, more or less raised ourselves and each other as we endlessly explored and genuinely raised some hell. BJ Mitchell, was omnipresent during it all. He was a Blue Devil through and through and he was a member of our village. He truly was the guy who’d give you the shirt off his back or show up to help you rip out your carpet. All of us know that BJ was the guy that would randomly call you just to talk about nothing, for hours. Sadly, suddenly, and very unexpectedly we lost BJ and once again our village is one smaller and worse for it. No matter where you end up after high school, you’re a Blue Devil for life. BJ was a devoted and loving father who took immense pride in his family. It’s unimaginable that it can happen in an instant and then it’s all too real. Someday, I hope BJ’s children can see through our actions how close knit Old Forge is taking care of their own. No amount of money alleviates the acute pain of loss, but it mitigates the second sting of financial burdens. Most of us know how expensive a funeral can be, and BJ’s family must also contend with getting him home. Please consider alleviating some of the financial strain on BJ’s family and let’s bring our boy home.
