30 years ago, my uncle Robert was in a car accident. He was hit from behind while in rush hour traffic. The person rear ended him going approx. 50 mph. The impact caused damage to his spine in which caused a disk to burst causing massive damage and pain in his left arm. He went to a specialist and was told surgery was the only option to stop the pain.
For 30 years after this operation, Robert had no complications with his surgery, and he exercised daily to keep in shape. About one year ago, one morning while tying his shoes, he realized his left hand wasn’t working properly.
He went to a doctor to find out what was wrong, and they sent him to another doctor who sent him to another doctor… over the course of 11 months they had sent him to 13 doctors in search of an answer. During this time, his condition became much worse.
During his search for an answer, he got an MRI of his total spine. The MRI showed the problem was a side effect of the surgery he had 30 years ago.
Due to the accident 30 years ago, the damage done caused the need for two vertebrae to need to be fuzzed together. The fusion of the two disks over time caused pressure on the disk above the fusion and below the fusion. The pressure on the vertebrae above caused the disk to herniate, putting pressure on his spinal cord. The pressure on his spinal cord has caused massive muscle wasting from his neck down. He has lost approx. 60 lbs. of muscle in 1 year. If he doesn’t get the operation to correct this problem, he may not be able to walk in the near future. He has already lost the ability to use his hands effectively. His breathing has become difficult and he gets very tired just walking across the room.
The problem is that he does not have enough insurance to cover the cost of the procedure. The public hospital where he lives would help him BUT they do not have the necessary equipment to perform the surgery. He needs to go to a private hospital for this surgery and the cost of this operation is $18,000.
Robert has a wife and young daughter that he loves and wants to take care of. The operation along with physical therapy, Robert will be able to go back to work as a photographer. He is asking for help in his time of need. He is grateful for any help!
Thank you.
