Robert Larger than Life in the Fight of his Life
Donation protected
Greetings,
I am truly grateful that you have decided to stop by this page, to at the very least, learn about my brother Robert Ingraham, and then, if possible, wish him well in the comments, or if you’re of faith, as we are, please pray for his recovery, as he fights with all he has within him, and humbly, if possible, donate whatever you are able, to his recovery rehabilitation, and hospital bills.
Again, I, as well as my entire family, thank you, immensely for your support, in whichever facet it comes in, truly!
Rob is a boundary pusher, for sure, he is full of life’s energy, he has an infectious sense of humor, witty, smartcastic, for sure, Rob is principled, and thus, is against this, albeit extremely appreciative of anyone taking the time to read this.
While NOT pushing the boundaries, on a summer August day, Rob was body-surfing (mask in pocket ;) the waves of Seal Beach, Ca., when, while riding a wave, he was slammed into a submerged sandbar, crushing his jaw. This was just the beginning. As he was attempting to recover from this impact, and regain his bearings, he felt the tide pulling his body back out into the ocean. This was an issue, as Rob realized that he couldn’t move his arms or legs, and even worse, he couldn’t move his head above the water. Truly folks, he laid there, still, floating backward, head underwater, unable to move, to take a breath, realizing his fate, calmly. Even worse than that, as he was being carried, it was getting deeper, thus he was able to see the ocean floor getting further and further away.
Now if it were me, I’d like to think I would have been calm, but that just wouldn’t be reality. I’d have drowned, while in a complete panic, to the point where I’d probably have spit water in Saint Peter’s face at the gate, while saying hello ;)
Not Rob, nope! He accepted his fate, made peace with God, and whether you’re a believer, we take great comfort in believing that our faith dictates our fate :)
Just as Rob felt himself giving into his drowning, two extremely aware teenage boys came to his rescue, braving their instincts to social distance, and carried my brother to the safety of the beach. As Rob felt the water leaving his lungs, and the air filling them, he did not care that he couldn’t move, he didn’t even think about it, (although all that sand in his face had to be a nightmare).
The lifeguard saw the boys, and rushed to assist, as did his girlfriend Jennifer (who was social distancing ;) as well) 911 was called, and more lifeguards assisted in taking Rob to an awaiting ambulance.
The outcome of this is that Rob has had complete reconstruction of his jaw, with 2 plates and 12 screws, and spinal surgery, C-3 through 7, consisting of 2 plates, 8 screws. Rob was in the ICU for over three weeks, and acute rehabilitation for another three weeks. His bills are currently over $400K, and as he recovers, he has at least a year of outpatient rehabilitation, and quadriplegic equipment; as well as his motorized wheelchair, lifts, 24-hour caregiving, and wheelchair accessible transportation will be costly as well.
We have a great family and friends network, however, again, against Rob’s wishes, we decided to reach out to others, who are boundary pushers, or people who can relate, or people who love the ocean, as my brother still does, or people of faith, or even those who believe he is lucky, it doesn’t matter, concern is concern, and truly appreciated!
Rob is paralyzed from the chest down, and has limited use of his arms and hands. He does have feeling in his legs, at times, so he is very optimistic about his recovery, and he is adamant that he will walk again.
I will update this page as his recovery progresses, and again, thank you!
