Hi family and friends, I'm going on an adventure! This fall semester I will be taking off to embark on a wilderness expedition- canyoneering, climbing and paddling the Green River in Utah, through Kroka Expeditions.
After attending Conserve School last fall, (an environment based semester school) I have found myself longing for a similar opportunity. I developed a newfound sense of independence, and rekindled my old love of the outdoors while at Conserve School, and after looking into Kroka, it seems to be a natural continuation of personal growth.
Conserve provided a space for 60 passionate and eager youth to come together and make change. All of the classes taught were linked in many ways to awareness and preservation of the wild. Although each day brought many outdoor excursions, it wasn't until our week long backpacking trip that I felt the depth of our classroom conversations.
The week my group spent on the North Country Trail evoked fear, excitement, teamwork, and adaptation I had never experienced. The weather was not always kind, and the bugs enjoyed our company, but we found comfort and safety being so in-tune with the rhythms of nature. There is a vulnerability and necessary out breath that takes place in the wild. After returning to campus, I found myself immediately yearning for that peace of mind.
My upcoming semester will allow me that exposure to the wild in a much deeper way. I am so excited to be fully immersed in the uncontrollable and to learn firsthand about the core relationship between mankind and nature.
In todays age, it is essential for the continuance of wild places, that we use our voices for change. Through this program, I am looking forward to becoming a more educated and effective advocate.
My Conserve School experience was fully funded by their scholarships, but Kroka is a much smaller school without an endowment. This has caused the financial aspect of Kroka to be a larger factor. In addition to the tuition cost, there is a long gear list to invest in.
I am reaching out to offer an opportunity to support me in this new adventure. I am so thankful for your consideration and encouragement.
I look forward to sharing my stories in December!
Much love,
Zinnia
