Hello to all my friends and family on Facebook. Tuesday morning Oct 14th at 9:15 am, my brother Chester Smith went on to be with our Lord and Savior. Unlike cancer and its nasty effects, my brother fought the long battle with Agent Orange which was used in Viet Nam. Chester proudly served in the 3Rd Army 1st Air Calv, 72nd air traffic company based out of Ft Rucker Alabama. Chester was a qualified civilian and Army air traffic controller as well as an instructor. Attended ATC school at Keesler Air force base Miss. also adding to his academic skills from Auburn University. In the middle of his Army career, was assigned to Fulda Germany on a mountain top named Wassa Hut; a radar site on the German border looking over the east. At the end of his Army career, Chester moved into the Alabama National Guard unit. Chester was always proud to tell everyone he served in the same Unit that high school friend Scotty Dodson and G.W. Bush served in at one time. When Chester decided it was time to move on, he had attained the rank of Sgt E 5.
After moving back to Georgia, Chester took a position as a controller at Fulton County airport during Reagans administration. The FAA wanted Chester for his qualifications as a civilian and military controller. Chester had not been there very long when the union decided to strike. Chester had just received his union card about 2 weeks before the strike, was told to walk, so Reagan fired everyone. Shortly after this Chester took a postion with National envelop close to his home in Power Springs where he stayed for 13 years. Eventually moving to Carrollton close to were dad was born and raised.
While in Carrollton, Chester found his place at Flint Hill UMC. Scouting had always been a place in his heart, so he found him a spot as a scout leader for many years helping bring up young boys to become Men. Teaching kids right from wrong, he found himself an Ordained Minister one day and has been ministering ever since, till his last breath tuesday morning. A couple of months ago, my brother told me about his health, where he stood in life with God and how much he loved everyone that has walked into our lives. He told me the one prayer he wanted the most was to have all his kids together with him at one time.
Recently Chesters prayers were answered. I have never seen my brother happier than to know He could hug and tell them all how much he loves them.
For Rob, Tom, Carrie and David. You will never know what it meant to Chester to have you all together before he passed from this earth into Gods hands.
