About Us!
We are the University College Dragon Boat Club (UCDBC), a team of passionate athletes looking to reach new heights in the sport of dragon boat. The goal of this fundraiser is to make competing in the 2026 Club Crew World Championships (CCWC) in Taiwan as accessible as possible for our members. Our main mission is to become a top-performing dragon boat team and to push our athletes to become the best version of themselves in and out of the boat. We are committed to training and developing our athletes with equal attention, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment to build lasting bonds, and encouraging a healthy lifestyle to enable our athletes to perform the best they can.
We have competed together with our sister team, New Dragons, since 2021. In 2024, we earned the title of 24U Canadian-American Club Champions, making us the fastest overall university dragon boat team in North America. We also won a total of 6 out of a possible 9 gold medals in the Club Crew World Championships in Italy, earning two silvers and one bronze medal in the other three races. Having qualified for CCWC in the upcoming year, our goal is to maintain our standing as a world championship team in Taiwan.
How Funds Will Be Used
All funds raised will be used to directly lower team fees for each athlete, with the ultimate goal of making the sport more accessible. Funds will be allocated towards all essential expenses associated with our journey to compete at the Club Crew World Championships in Taiwan for the next two seasons. This includes:
- Paddle training expenses: Dragon boat rental fees, Dragon boat storage costs, paddling club membership fees, and indoor training facility bookings
- Jerseys for competition
- Regatta registration fees (shockingly expensive!)
- Travel Expenses: Ground transportation and necessary accommodations in Taiwan
In total, expenses are projected to be upwards of $70,000 CAD--that means each member may need to pay as much as $1,200 CAD in fees! On top of other costs covered separately from team fees (equipment like paddles, public transit costs to and from practice multiple times a week, etc.), it adds up, especially for students.
Your valuable support ensures we can channel our efforts into rigorous preparation and outstanding performance. As university students aiming to make our mark on the world stage, we strive to inspire others by showcasing dedication and achievement. Your donations are pivotal in turning our dream into our collective reality.
As a student-driven club, we appreciate any kind of support, and we invite you to join us on our incredible journey to Taiwan by supporting our GoFundMe page. Whether it's making a donation or simply sharing out fundraiser, your assistance will directly contribute to our success and ensure that this team can continue to support future athletes far beyond our time in this competition. Thank you for considering joining us in this exciting venture!
Sincerely,
The UCDBC Team
