On July 31, 2025, Mekhi bravely underwent a suboccipital craniotomy to remove a large tumor pressing against his brainstem and extending from the base of his skull into the top of his thoracic spine. This delicate region controls essential functions like movement, coordination, and breathing. To stabilize his spine and relieve the pressure caused by the tumor’s impact on his upper vertebrae, Mekhi also underwent a C1–C7 posterior cervical decompression laminectomy and C2–T2 posterior cervical spinal fusion, a complex procedure involving the placement of hardware to protect his spinal cord and support recovery.
The surgeries were successful, thanks to the remarkable neurosurgical team at Houston Methodist. However, a small portion of the tumor remains attached to his spine and will require radiation. The road ahead is long and filled with physical, emotional, and financial hurdles—but Mekhi is ready to face it with grit and determination.

What’s Next for Mekhi:
Mekhi will need extensive rehabilitation, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and possibly speech therapy to regain full function. He may need to re-learn basic tasks, rebuild his strength, and adjust to life with spinal hardware and the changes that come with it.
Despite the challenges, Mekhi remains focused on his future. He plans to finish school and has set his sights on a career in kinesiology or physical therapy—fields that reflect his athletic background and desire to help others heal. This journey has given him a powerful perspective and deepened his purpose.
