Road to Recovery for Maggie Kari

Donation protected

We're raising money to help pave the way of recovery for our wonderful mom, Maggie Kari. She had her right foot amputated on May 3, 2018.

The pain in her foot started back in January. We took her to the Norman Regional Hospital and they determined that it was a blood clot. They sent her home with some antibiotics, pain medicine and told her to keep it elevated. Her hours at the daycare kept cutting back because she couldn't be on her feet for long periods of time. After a few weeks, the pain was still very severe and she had to go back to the hospital. They said it was still the blood clot and that she may have a fracture. Again, they sent her home with pain medicine and told her to keep it elevated. Needless to say this happened a few more times.

On Saturday, April 28 Maggie was in so much pain that she went back to Norman Regional Hospital. She was there for a few hours and they sent her home with pain medicine. Over the next few days she suffered from all the pain. One night she fell over her feet in the bathroom and couldn't get herself up. She wasn't near her phone so she was unable to call anyone for help. She stayed on the floor for six hours when her neighbor came over to check up on her in the morning.

That's when we knew we had to do something else. She couldn't take care of herself, and we couldn't either with our work schedules. On Wednesday, May 2 we took her to OU Medical Center. All of the doctors were very concerned with her and were determined to help Maggie get better. They checked her in overnight immediately and started on testing. After all of these tests they found the infection and that it was life threatening. They had no choice but to amputate. Of course we were okay with the amputation since it was going to take our mother's life. We were also angry. Angry that we had taken our mom to the hospital and doctor on multiple occasions yet the infection was found too late. She was in Norman Regional on Saturday with only a blood clot, yet four days later her foot is being taken off due to the infection being so bad.

Over the span of one week she had five surgeries. Since the infection had spread so much, they have cut up to below the knee. It was a difficult week but Maggie kept her positive attitude throughout it all.

We are working together as a team to get my mom back on her feet again. We can't go back in time to get her foot back but we can work together to get a new one.

She's been diagnosed with diabetes and congestive heart failure. Unfortunately, she's uninsured which means she can't get the best treatment. We are raising money to help with costs such as physical therapy, a prosthetic foot, medical bills, medical equipment and household bills. We are working on applying for disability and Medicaid but that'll take some time to kick in and that's if she's accepted. The social worker from OU Medical Center said she wouldn't get accepted but still to try, so that's what we're doing. If you have any other ideas of charities or assistance to apply for please let us know.

Obviously, something like this causes depression, we are working on keeping her spirits lifted. If you can't help monetarily we need help in other ways too. A prayer, meal, medical equipment or just a visit would help! She loves being around family and friends and sometimes all she needs is to see your smiling face and a hug.

Thanks for all your love and support and keep our mom in your thoughts and prayers!
