Road to Recovery for Jennifer Wiedrick

On April 7, 2022, Jennifer Wiedrick was in a cross country lesson when she had a fall at one of the jumps. She was immediately transported to Shands Hospital University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. The same day, she underwent emergency surgery involving her C4 vertebrae. Since that time, she has had to undergo multiple surgeries in order stabilize her body from the spinal trauma. She has been diagnosed with C4 ASIA A, which is a spinal cord injury, and presently, she does not have the use of her limbs. In addition to the paralysis, she is also on a ventilator and working hard to breathe independently. In the next few weeks, Jennie will be transferred to Shepherds Center, a spinal cord rehabilitation facility in Atlanta, GA. This facility will provide her the best rehabilitative medicine to help with her recovery. 

 

While Jennie has regular health insurance, the cost of this injury is catastrophic. She will not be able to work and many expenses will not be covered by insurance. Specifically, it is estimated that the transportation cost to Shepherds Center will be approximately $30,000 round trip. Jennie will endure extensive rehabilitation for roughly 6 to 8 weeks prior to returning home. Once she is home, she will require 24/7 around-the-clock care. The cost of a full time nurse for an 8 hour shift is estimated to be $125,000 a year. Jennie will most likely require skilled nursing care for the remainder of her life. In addition to skilled nursing, Jennie’s home will require extensive modifications, and she will need therapeutic equipment, as well as adaptive motor vehicle transportation. 

 

There is no one who has a deeper passion for horses and riding than Jennie. With this monetary assistance, we believe, that she will fight her hardest to persevere.
