We are fundraising for our beautiful friend Connie, who has recently undergone extensive advanced nasal cancer surgery at Vancouver General Hospital November 24, 2016.
The complex 12 hour surgery constisted of a foot long incision on Connie's arm which was a source of bone and soft tissue used to recreate the nose structure. A skin graft was taken from her upper thigh for her new nose. A flap taken from her scalp has been temporaly been positioned to protect the bone, muscle and skin grafts, that will ultimately be her new nose. The doctor is cautiously optimistic that he removed the cancer, but that radiation is essential. Connie will begin radiation in January 2017, 5 days a week for 5-6 weeks in Kelowna. The temporary flap from her scalp will then be removed after radiation is complete which will then require further surgery in February 2017, including ongoing follow ups back and forth to Vancouver.
She will be arriving home one day this week and arrangements have been made for nursing 2-3 days per week, to ensure all health related issues are being appropriately managed.
All donations will be used for transportation costs eg. gas, accommodations, meals etc... all necessary to continue with ongoing medical treatment.
Connie's mother Colleen Mellin from Calgary, is full of mixed emotions, "No mother should ever have to see their child in such a condition and nothing anyone can tell you can adequately prepare you for what a loved one can look like after this type of surgery. To say it's heart breaking is an understatement but knowing it is an essential part of the overall recovery process makes it bearable."
On behalf of myself, Colleen(Connie's mother), Dakota (Connie's daughter), Cole (Connie's son), Robert Scarrow (Connie's partner) and the many wonderful supportive friends in Connie's circle...Thank you so much in advance and from the bottom of our hearts for helping Connie on her "Road To Recovery".
