Mijn naam is Jolien Maliga Boumkwo, een 30-jarige vrouw geboren en getogen in Gent met roots in Kameroen. Ik ben meervoudig Belgisch kampioen kogelstoten en hamerslingeren. Daarnaast staat het Belgisch record kogelstoten op mijn naam. Volgend jaar vinden de Olympische Spelen in Parijs plaats. Mijn ultieme droom en enige doel is om hieraan deel te nemen. Ik geloof dat iedereen zijn/haar verhaal heeft en zou heel graag het mijne delen. Ik zette mijn eerste stapjes op de atletiekpiste toen ik 6 jaar was. Het was reeds vlug duidelijk dat ik een voorliefde en talent had voor werpen. Talent alleen is niet genoeg. Ook doorzetting, motivatie, inzet en discipline zijn vereist. Waar een wil is, is een weg! In mijn tienerjaren werd mijn harde werk en inzet snel beloond. Ik verbrak in 2010 mijn eerste nationale record kogelstoten in de U18 leeftijdscategorie. Twee jaar nadien verbeterde ik het nationaal record hamerslingeren. Deze veelbelovende resultaten waren een goede drijfveer en motivatie om op 20-jarige leeftijd professioneel te trainen. In de daaropvolgende jaren verbrak ik meerdere malen nationale records en werd ik verschillende keren Belgisch kampioen in zowel kogelstoten als hamerslingeren. Ik combineerde mijn sportieve carrière met een studie handelswetenschappen aan de Universiteit van Gent. Maar ik had maar één droom: de Olympische Spelen. Helaas kwam er in 2017 een tijdelijk einde aan mijn jonge sportieve carrière. Op dat moment was ik niet zeker hoe lang en of ik ooit de draad weer zou oppakken. Door omstandigheden verloor ik de liefde, passie en perspectieven in de sport. Stiekem hoopte ik om ooit de moed te vinden om mijn droom uiteindelijk alsnog te vervullen. De jaren nadien waren moeilijk, maar heel belangrijk voor mij. Ik was steeds op zoek naar mezelf en een passie, zowel op professioneel vlak als op sportief. Niets kon vervangen wat ik ooit voelde en beleefde tijdens mijn atletiekcarrière. Het was moeilijk om vrede te nemen met mijn pijnlijke beslissing en naar mijn gevoel had ik gefaald. Het 'wat als' gevoel bleef aan mij knagen. In de zomer van 2021, tijdens een roadtrip in Frankrijk, waren de Olympische Spelen in Tokio volop aan de gang. Er viel plots een enorme last van mijn schouders. Ik had het gevoel dat ik terug kon ademen en een pijnlijke periode kon afsluiten. Ik wilde een nieuw hoofdstuk beginnen en afmaken waaraan ik was begonnen. Van zodra ik terug thuis was van zomerreis nam ik contact op met de Technisch directeur van de Vlaamse Atletiek Liga. Ik lichtte mijn ambities en intenties toe en hij bracht me in contact met mijn huidige trainer, Tom Corstjens. Op 2 november 2021 blies ik mijn sportcarrière nieuw leven in. En nu, voor écht. In februari 2022 werd ik Belgisch Kampioen kogelstoten en in de zomer was ik, zonder het te beseffen, slechts één plaats verwijderd van een deelname aan het Europees Kampioenschap. Na een productieve winterstage in Zuid-Afrika verbreek ik amper anderhalf jaar na mijn comeback 3 keer op rij het 26 jaar oude Belgisch record kogelstoten indoor. Als kers op de taart kwalificeerde ik me voor het Europees Kampioenschap indoor. De goede resultaten die ik haal zijn een gevolg van hard werk en bewuste keuzes die ik maak. Ik investeer in mezelf op fysiek, emotioneel en financieel vlak. Ik ben dan ook vastberaden om volgend jaar de Olympische Spelen in Parijs te halen. Momenteel combineer ik mijn sportieve passie met een job als adviseur financiële controle bij het Vlaams Agentschap Innoveren & Ondernemen. Ik kan mij geen betere werkgever voorstellen. Zij maken het mogelijk om mijn trainingsschema optimaal te combineren met mijn werkroutine. Ze staan ook 100% achter mijn sportcarrière. Daarnaast heb ik de eer om het Belgische sportmerk UNRUN te vertegenwoordigen. Het is belangrijk om je goed te voelen in je vel en de juiste sport outfit kan hierbij zeker helpen. Ik ben heel dankbaar dat de Vlaamse Atletiek Liga in mij gelooft en mij opnieuw de kans geeft om mezelf te ontwikkelen en ontplooien. Ik zit in een mooie omkadering, maar momenteel is de financiële steun nog beperkt. Met jouw steun zou het voor mij mogelijk zijn om nog eens op trainingsstage te gaan in november 2023 en januari 2024. Het recent verleden leert mij dat dit een absolute must is om veelbelovende resultaten te behalen. Ik wil voor mezelf de allerbeste voorwaarden creëren om volgend jaar als de beste mogelijke versie van mezelf op de Olympische Spelen te staan. My journey to the present as a 29 year old professional athlete did not run smoothly. My first steps in track and field began more than two decades ago at the age of 6. From the start it was clear that I had a knack for throwing. Talent by itself is not enough and I had to apply myself and show discipline from a very young age. The fact that I found my passion in track and field was a key success factor to put me in the position I am today. An opportunity to reach my dream of competing in the Olympics. In my early teen years; training, devotion and passion started paying off and the records began coming in. In 2010 I broke my first national record ever by improving the distance in the U18 age category of shot put. In 2012 I broke the 14-year old national record in hammer throw. I showed a lot of promise and at the age of 20 it was time to take my training to the next level. My love for shot put and hammer throwing were clear at this point and the decision to dedicate my time to these disciplines was inevitable. During the next couple of years I broke a couple of more records and became national champion numerous times all whilst studying for my masters’ degree at the University of Ghent. This fueled by one goal, you guessed it, the Olympic Games in Tokyo of 2020. In 2017, after some reflection, I decided however to take a step back from the track & field-scene. Unsure of how long, if ever, it would take me to regain the passion for the sport I once dedicated my whole life to. During this period the realization came that despite all the passion, successes and satisfaction, I had to admit the fire in me disappeared. I had lost my love and perspectives. There are a couple of reasons I can think of which pushed me to take this decision. The lack of a solid framework, combining work and practicing on a professional level, financial concerns etc. Although the decision was a 100% conscious, does not mean I made peace with it. The next four years was one big quest to find my next challenge in life. Work objectives and other sport activities could not replace the sensation of competing on a high level. Fast forward to the summer of 2021. During summer holidays road tripping in France all of a sudden a weight fell off my shoulders. The Olympics Games in Tokyo were taking place at that time, and adrenaline was rushing through my veins. No matter how hard I had tried to leave this dream behind in the previous years, I felt I had unfinished business. As soon as I arrived home, I reached out to the technical director of the Flemish Athletics Federation. Apparently the organization surrounding athletes changed for the better. I explained my intentions, and was brought in contact with the coach of shot put, Tom Cortjens. The 2nd of November 2021 marks the start of my second career as a professional athlete. It did not take long for the results to become promising. I felt everything falling into place. My clear mindset, the unrelentless pursuing of my goal, the new technique and of course, last but not least, my coach. I can tell you that, if you would have told me 1,5 years ago I would not only become national champion again but I would also break my own record, it would have been hard to believe you. However, I did it, not once, not twice but three times in a row. An unbelievable sensation, an athlete high, to reach this level of competition and surpassing all previous distances. Unexpectedly I got picked up to compete in the European Championships in Istanbul. All of my successes are a consequence of my own decisions, effort and discipline I have put into the process. I have invested in myself, not only physically but also mentally and financially. This time I will do absolutely anything to make this Olympic dream finally come true. Currently I combine my passion with working for the Flemish Government as an financial advisor. I am so grateful that my employer ‘Vlaams Agentschap Innoveren & Ondernemen’ makes it possible to make my work and training schedule function. They are one of my biggest support. As an athlete it is important to feel good in your skin, UNRUN (a Belgian sport brand) helps me with that. Thanks to them I am able to feel more confident in the sport gear I wear. Even though the Flemish Athletic Federation did already a lot for me by giving me a new chance and creating a successful framework around athletes, at the moment the financial support is very limited.
