Today, my father collapsed while at work and inevitably passed away after multiple resuscitation efforts at Walter Reed Medical Center. As much as the news came as a complete shock to our family being notified by phone calls, the same impact was felt by his coworkers whom he worked amongst for many years.

As a first-generation immigrant from El Salvador, my father always did all that he could to provide for his family and care for his mother, whom he helped bring to the United States. Dog lover, proud grandfather, passionate cook, and kayaking enthusiast are just a few ways to describe who my father really was. But most of all, he was proud of who he was and how he lived his life. Even after overcoming a stroke, complications with his heart, and having to have dialysis performed multiple times a week, there was never anything that was going to keep my father's spirits down. Sadly, today is the day we are no longer blessed by his spirit.

The unanticipated cost of funeral expenses, burying my father, and selecting a casket is our purpose for this GoFundMe. Regardless of the holiday season, there is not anything more that I ask for this year than the sudden financial support to help finally lay my father to rest.

I want to offer a very special thank you to the staff of Cafe 8901 who welcomed my father like family for well over a decade and were with him until his last moments, as well as the doctors, nurses, and other supporting medical staff at Walter Reed Medical Center who did all that they could to bring my father back to life.

Hoy, mi padre sufrió un colapso mientras estaba en el trabajo y, tras múltiples intentos de reanimación en el Centro Médico Walter Reed, falleció inevitablemente. La noticia, que nos llegó por teléfono, supuso un shock total para nuestra familia, pero el impacto fue el mismo para sus compañeros de trabajo, con los que había colaborado durante muchos años.

Como inmigrante de primera generación procedente de El Salvador, mi padre siempre hizo todo lo posible por mantener a su familia y cuidar de su madre, a quien ayudó a traer a Estados Unidos. Amante de los perros, orgulloso abuelo, cocinero apasionado y entusiasta del kayak son solo algunas de las formas en que se puede describir quién era realmente mi padre. Pero, sobre todo, estaba orgulloso de quién era y de cómo había vivido su vida. Incluso después de superar un derrame cerebral, complicaciones cardíacas y tener que someterse a diálisis varias veces a la semana, nunca hubo nada que pudiera desanimar a mi padre. Lamentablemente, hoy es el día en que ya no podemos disfrutar de su espíritu.

El coste imprevisto de los gastos del funeral, el entierro de mi padre y la elección del ataúd es el motivo por el que hemos creado esta campaña en GoFundMe. Independientemente de que sea época de fiestas, no hay nada más que pida este año que el apoyo económico repentino para ayudar a dar finalmente descanso a mi padre.

Quiero expresar mi más sincero agradecimiento al personal del Café 8901, que acogió a mi padre como a uno más de la familia durante más de una década y estuvo con él hasta sus últimos momentos, así como a los médicos, enfermeras y demás personal sanitario del Walter Reed Medical Center que hicieron todo lo posible.
