Help Elijah’s parents
Elijah was born with Ornithine Transcarbamylase Deficiency (OTC Deficiency). A little about OTC Deficiency, with this condition the liver doesn’t produce an enzyme that helps with the breakdown of proteins. Since his liver doesn’t produce that enzyme the proteins don’t get broken down and excreted properly, so toxic levels of ammonia accumulate in the blood which can cause brain damage and even death. The only cure for OTC is a liver transplant. He was approved and listed for the transplant on January 14, 2020 and the call came in on March 4, 2020. Since the call, he was successfully transplanted on March 5, 2020 and began his long road to recovery. This is where Elijah’s parents are going to need your help. The road to recovery involves an extensive stay at Lurie’s Children Hospital in Chicago, even after being discharged from the hospital they will have to remain in Chicago for a while, to be closely monitored for rejection and any other complications that may arise. Even when they are finally allowed to go home, they will still have weekly travels back and forth to Chicago. Until they’re able to come home, Elijah’s mom will be off work for several months to take care of and support him through this process. During all of this, Elijah’s dad will be at home taking care of his brother and sisters and will travel back and forth when able. This means that not only are there going to be additional expenses that they were not able to save for in such a short notice but also a loss of income with his mom having to be away from her job! Even if you are not able to contribute financially the family will also be grateful for any prayers and positive thoughts.
