My name is Randi Folk and my younger sister's husband, Dan has recently been diagnosed with a debilitating kidney disease earlier this year. He has been very ill and not able to work and not able to do much of anything. After a blood test he was immediately called back and referred to a specialist who hurried Dan along the proper steps to diagnose his condition.
Within a couple days Dan had a kidney biopsy. The results came back that he has Iga Nephropathy (nuh-FROP-uh-thee), otherwise known as Berger's disease. Based on the biopsy, the numbers were so bad, worst they had ever seen, the Dr quickly prescribed him strong IV prednisone for the next few days. Dan continued the prednisone treatment for a month and when he went back to see the Dr. his numbers had doubled....the wrong way. The prednisone treatment had not been successful.
The next step was a cancer treatment, which the government gives out for free. Side effects include....getting cancer. They asked for any other options and the next option was a drug called ACTH. This drug is not free. Dan started taking two doses a week. The Dr said they have never put anyone on two doses in all the years of being a medical professional.
The biopsy showed Dan to have kidney damage and we are praying for this drug to be the answer to Dan getting his health and quality of life back. Berger's disease has no cure, but can be slowed down. The kidney damage can not be repaired. The next step after this drug is kidney dialysis and finally kidney transplant.
Many people wanted to know how they can help. If you felt in your heart that you would like to, any amount helps during this time of uncertainty. The last thing anyone should have to do is stress out about finances.
Thank you all so much for taking the time to read this and to help out this young family!
Love,
Randi Folk
