Twelve years ago, my Mom called to tell me that she'd been diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis). The impact of that diagnosis and that phone call has not been lost on me. I remember the moment I learned about my Mom's feelings of paralysis. I felt the ache when she had to withdraw from college because the MS made things too difficult for her. I recall my hot tears as I listened to the accounts of the falls she took, and the increasing difficulty she experienced walking. I remember my shock as I saw her rely on a walker, and the day when she began to need a wheelchair. For those who do not know about MS, it is a disease that effects the coating (myelin sheeth) on the nerves. This causes "misfires" and poorly relayed signals to the brain and body. Lesions form on the brain and spine effecting movement, speech, and the systems of the body. It is painful, it is disabling, and it is incurable. For me it is debilitating to see her tears, to know that her will is to play with her grandchildren, to be in school, and to speak freely. My only moments of peace lie in the knowledge that she is being cared for by my Dad. It is the vow for better or worse that he has taken to heart, and he cares for Mom with every amount of energy, financial resource, and emotional fortitude that he possesses. I have seen what is necessary to care for my Mom in the way the disease now demands, and it is not a small feat. What I am asking of you is that you please contribute what you are able to ensure that my Mom can continue to receive in home care, medical resources, and the presence of my Dad which she so desperately needs. To alleviate the burden of financial responsibilities for them, would be to allow their love story to continue and for their time together to be with peace of mind and rest in provision through your contribution. Please bring some rest to the weary and donate to a positive quality of life. On behalf of their daughter, I thank you from the depths of my heart.
