7/15/19 Update:
River’s journey continues. After a failed surgery in March to remove a cyst on her brain she will be undergoing a very serious surgery on Monday to attempt again. The original surgery was stopped mid way through because of a brain bleed.
She has been struggling with pain and weakness which led to tests locally in Kentucky. Thursday night she was airlifted to Chicago because of complications. The cyst is now larger and embedded deeper in her brain making it much harder to get to. Her brain has also started to shift because of the cyst and the fact that a portion of her skull is still missing.
Please pray for this sweet, sweet girl and her medical team.
River. She loves to dance. She's all girl. She loves dolls and because most of her life has been spent in and out of the hospital, she loves to play doctor.
3.31.17 was a day that changed everything. What was supposed to be a "routine" 4 hour skull surgery for 2 year old River, turned into a 16 hour brain surgery because of unexpected complications. River suffered a brain injury, stroke and lost copious amounts of blood. Portions of her skull had to be left off because of the swelling.
Once River's little body was strong enough for her skull to be placed back on, her body rejected it as a foreign body. During this process she had another stroke, suffered from a bone infection and developed a cyst on her brain.
River has had 9 brain and skull surgeries in the last 1.5 years. To find her medical help for what has turned extremely complicated, her family travels 6 hours to Chicago so she can receive high level care. Last year alone River spent over 5 months away from home and her siblings Elijah (10) and Emily (14). In August, doctors took ribs to make her a new skull and sadly her body is now beginning to reject those as well.
River is currently struggling again and will need multiple and lengthy stays away from home. Last Friday, her doctor told the family to come and plan to stay. Without treatment, her brain can swell, she can have seizures and will lose skills like walking and talking.
As you can imagine, this is financially, physically and emotionally crippling. We don't want River to spend her birthday on 2/21 in a hospital, but more than that, we want River to get the care she needs so she can spend the next year being 4. We want her playing with dolls, laughing and living life - because that's what 4 year olds should be doing.
Let's get River to Chicago and let's show Jessie, Rick, Emily and Elijah what community means and make this insanely hard journey a little easier.
