Set in the 1990’s, Rite of Passage is a surrealist, psychological horror, that explores the absurdity of societal or family traditions that are just blindly followed without ever being questioned.
Dahlia is a quiet, reserved, young woman- who wants nothing more than to just grieve for her grandmother alone, at home. Instead she’s standing outside in the cold, waiting to be let into a faded old home to participate in a strange, ritualistic, family tradition to ‘honour’ her grandmother. Dread and nausea fills her stomach as she thinks about what she has to do. Although warm and inviting- there is something off about the house, a cold presence that wraps itself around Dahlia’s lungs stealing her energy. Already feeling overwhelmed, her tense relationship with her mother does nothing to help ease her nerves as she steps over the threshold and into the house.
