Ever since COVID-19 began to emerge in the U.S. earlier this year, my mom has taken the crisis very seriously. She wears a mask everywhere and abides by social distancing guidelines, etc. As a healthcare worker she works in a hospital environment and in operating rooms daily so she understands how serious this virus can be.  Unfortunately, she out of the blue lost consciousness on July 12th, and out of an abundance of caution was taken by Ambulance to Southwest General for evaluation.  She was admitted and began developing flu-like symptoms that evening and tested positive for COVID-19. Over the next week what began as mild symptoms became worse. She had trouble breathing and was put on supplemental oxygen. Each day breathing became harder and her oxygen levels were increased. She was moved to the ICU where more care was available but her condition continued to worsen.  On July 25th she had to be intubated and placed on a ventilator.  The past week we have had ups and downs, including life-flighting her to the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus where she is now and remains on a ventilator. 

Everyone who knows Rita has experienced her willingness to befriend strangers, open her doors, answer the phone when you need someone to talk to, and sing all night long.  She’s a free spirit and one we’ve all come to rely on.  You also probably know she is a fighter.  She never gives up and is determined in everything she does.  She will beat this. 

However, we know this virus is nasty and it will be a long road to recovery.  Rita doesn’t like to ask for help, so I’m asking on her behalf.  My goal is to ensure the life-saving measures taken by the dozens of medical heroes in the last few weeks and the physical therapy she’ll likely need don’t become a burden as she focuses on returning to health.  Please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers.   Thank you!
