Rise Up And Read: Support Refugee Children
Tax deductible
Join us to support literacy and attachment for children living in refugee camps in Reynosa, Mexico. Rise Up And Read started as a conversation between two friends, Dr Susanna Block (pediatrician) and Dr Lesley Sylvan, speech language pathologist, (SLP). How to best support literacy and attachment for children in refugee camps. In partnership with Dr Robyn Becker, speech language pathology graduate students at Montclair University and Solidarity Engineering (a humanitarian engineering ngo working in Reynosa Mexico) Rise Up And Read has distributed 600 bilingual early reading books with thought questions, conducted a field assessment of book needs in the camps and created a patient facing portal for bilingual books.
Our goal is to build upon this foundational work and raise $13,500 for the following projects.
- Thoughtfully curated bilingual books for distribution
- Creation of a refugee library in a Reynosa, Mexico refugee shelter
- Provide families with "reading prescriptions" and conversation starter "thought questions" to promote attachment and literacy
- Continue to build the early literacy website with access to books
Our goal is to raise 13,500. All donations will go to Solidarity Engineering earmarked for this project .
