This journey comes with a heavy heart and a big ask from our family. Over the past few months, the symptoms of Luke’s Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) have become more apparent, and after much prayer, research, and conversations with families who have walked this path, we knew we needed a second opinion.
Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) is home to the only team of specialists in the world dedicated to treating Luke’s specific CHD. We transferred his records, spoke with multiple doctors, and waited for answers. This week, we received the news—Luke needs to travel to Boston for additional testing, and depending on the results, he may undergo heart surgery while we are there.
We are preparing for a trip to Boston this spring, where Luke will undergo extensive testing and consultations with the surgical team. If surgery is needed, we hope to have everything scheduled in one trip. We anticipate staying in Boston for 2-3 weeks, far from home, our support system, and anything familiar.
While we are incredibly grateful to be moving in the right direction to improve Luke’s quality of life, this journey also comes with uncertainty and significant logistical challenges. From coordinating medical appointments to arranging travel, lodging, childcare for Jane Esther (Luke’s amazing big sister), and managing time off work—it’s a lot.
We are fortunate to have good insurance; however, the costs of flights, lodging, meals, and lost income from time off work add up quickly. Any financial support will go directly toward these expenses and will be used wisely.
We are so grateful for the love and support surrounding us. Every prayer, message, donation, and act of kindness means the world to our family as we prepare for this life-changing trip.
With love and gratitude,
Eli, Jamie, Luke & Jane Esther
