Rise in Light

The Covid-19 pandemic has created unprecedented need in every corner of the globe, especially for our most vulnerable populations — children, low-income families, the elderly, and individuals facing job disruptions. These groups now face even greater barriers to receiving safe and consistent access to meals, medication, and basic necessities. In slums in Lagos, Nigeria like Makoko and Iwaya; many skilled manual laborers have suffered a reduction in income or lost their jobs entirely, and therefore lack their means of subsistence. Children in particular, who are set to determine our futures, are at the brink of derailing developmental paths due to breaks in schooling, health threats, and an aggravated living conditions.

Our goal is to ease the burden on their households during this period of instability, global lock downs, and economic turmoil. We realize COVID-19 is affecting all of us, but it is important that less privileged families in our global communities know that they are not alone.

Melanin Unscripted , in collaboration with Alton Mason , are embarking on ‘Rise in Light’, a social impact campaign to provide creative solutions towards the ongoing COVID-19 relief efforts by Khan Foundation Junior Academy  in Lagos, Nigeria. Located in the Makoko and Iwaya slums, Khan are part of a wider community of families whose livelihoods have been severely affected by the economic pressures of COVID-19. Khan Foundation is an organization focused on education development in Nigeria.

We have an opportunity to come together to support our global community in this critical time of need. Let's stand as one and make a difference.

What we want to do:
Through the “Rise in Light” campaign, we aim to urgently support this community. With this fundraiser and additional support, we will  raise $10,000 USD to the relief activities of Khan Foundation Junior Academy. The foundation will continue their work in the community by providing relief packages of basic necessities such as food and toiletries and workshops to educate people in the community on how to stay safe.

What we have done:
Through the creation of a coming of age short film featuring international supermodel, Alton Mason, the “Rise in Light” campaign was created. Set in the heart of Lagos, Nigeria, and as a debut to Alton’s first song, this story is used to highlight our connection to people, the environment, and particularly the children of Lagos, through an insight into Alton’s  own self-discovery. Through the distribution of the film we will gain the attention of public figures, and place a spotlight on Lagos and the need for action during this critical time.

What Khan Foundation has done:
Right before the nation-wide lock down in Nigeria, Khan Foundation ran a 'Panic Buy for the Poor’ where they crowdsourced and distributed over 600 boxes of Indomie noodles (containing 40 noodles each) to each family, alongside bottles of hand wash and hand sanitizers. They also held an informative session on the COVID-19 educating the community on the virus, preventive measures, how to identify symptoms and actions to take if infected. The community was taught how to promote an educational environment at home for their students while they are unable to go to school.

How you can help:
If you are in a position to contribute and have the means to take action monetarily, you can support by donating today. No dollar amount is too small. With just $30 your donation can provide a month of relief items for up to a family of 8 and the goal is to reach a total of 300+ families.

Join our movement to create awareness: Share a video with your community on what the world needs more of at this time and end it with “Rise in Light” and follow @RiseinLight on Instagram and @RiseinLightorg  on Twitter.

This is an unusual time for all of us, and this unique crisis of uncertainty, fear, and lack of resources is felt deeply. So, please join us as we help our communities during this critical time. #RiseinLight
