Our daughter Riley was involved in an accident while enjoying a day at the river with some friends. She fell from the top rocks off a rope swing and hit her face on the rocks below. It was about a 10-foot fall. She suffered a lacerated chin, broken jaw, and damaged teeth. We will need to rule out a broken nose as well. She will be on a soft food/liquid diet for 6 weeks. She is swollen, sore, but in good spirits most of the time. Out of all of this, she did admit that riding in the ambulance was pretty fun lol.
We will be dealing with a lot of out-of-pocket expenses that I was originally hoping insurance would cover; unfortunately, that is not the case. The specialist she was referred to by the ER doesn't take our insurance, and we had to pay out of pocket for her to get the surgery she needed in a timely manner. This is nothing a typical dentist/orthodontist would touch and waiting longer would jeopardize the bone, teeth, and her ability to eat/drink. Some of the bone that was shifted out of place blocked her ability to breathe from one side of her nose. Today we met with her primary dentist since her bottom teeth have become painful. The doctor put together a plan to address Riley's teeth once the surgeon gives us the OK to proceed. We are looking at 6 implants on the top, plus 6 crowns on the bottom. Insurance will cover root canals, extractions, and the temporary partial she will need, but that's all. Overall, it will take approximately a year to fix all the damage from the accident.
