As many of you know last November, Riley went to the Emergency Room in Moscow, ID with difficulty breathing. Doctors discovered that he had a partially collapsed lung, with large amounts of fluid building up within the lining of his chest. After multiple ER admissions, an 8-day hospital stay in a Spokane Intensive Care Unit, and several consults with specialists in Idaho, Spokane and Seattle, Riley was diagnosed with a rare form of aggressive, stage 4 lung cancer. This news has been devastating for the entire family, especially since Riley, a former football player for Washington State, has always been a healthy, non-smoker and is only 38 years old.
Riley and his wife, Erin, have 3 wonderful children: Daniel age 13; Noah age 12; and Kyra age 8. They enjoy being an active family and we could always find Riley helping with his sons’ sports teams or on an outdoor adventure - hiking, fishing or at a local orchard.
Riley is a husband, father, son, brother, and friend and is special to us all in one way or another. He is loved dearly and it is with the permission of Riley and Erin that this GoFundMe page has been created to help with the enormous expenses for his treatment and care.
Riley’s condition has deteriorated significantly over the last month. Since last November, he has lost more than 100 pounds; he was recently diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism, and multiple other clots were found around his lung. Riley receives weekly chemotherapy treatment and his symptoms have been debilitating. Erin is now Riley’s full-time caretaker, as he is physically too weak and sick to be left home alone. Throughout this time, Riley has somehow found the strength to continue working, but this will soon be impossible to continue. When Riley transitions into long term disability, he and his entire family will lose their healthcare benefits, and half of Riley’s income.
These past 9 months have been extremely difficult for the entire family, and the pace of Riley’s worsening condition has been shocking and devastating.
