"You have breast cancer." No one wants to hear these words. We didn't want this to be Rikki's story. Now it is time to fight.
People are already showing such kindness to Rikki. Her 5th grade students have made her cards and her teacher teammates have rallied around her to help her meet the day to day demands of teaching.
Rikki was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma on April 16th, 2019. Her treatment plan includes chemotherapy, followed by mastectomy (at this time a single mastectomy is planned but could change to a double mastectomy), and then more chemotherapy. Her treatment center is about 30 minutes from her home. So far she has had never-ending appointments including blood-work, lung capacity test, an X-ray, EKG, a mammogram, a breast MRI. A PETSCAN was ordered to check if the cancer had spread to other organs and the insurance denied it. A CT is ordered pending insurance approval. An echocardiogram will happen on Tuesday, May 7th, and port placement surgery for chemo delivery will be on May 10th. Chemotherapy will follow.
Even though she has insurance coverage, the bills are already piling up and she hasn't even started her treatment.
