Righting a Wrong--Justice for Anthony Broadwater

Donation protected

Hi, my name is Sheryl and I am fundraising to help cover the legal fees for a man that was wrongly convicted of a rape, who has already served his time in prison, but deserves the chance to have his name cleared so that he is not serving the life sentence of shame that has followed him out of prison. Here is his story.

In 1999, a book was written detailing a horrific sexual assault that occurred in 1981. The convicted rapist in the book, referred to as Gregory Madison, may not be guilty as the Syracuse judge found him in 1982.

A private investigator in Syracuse, recently interviewed a member of the prosecution team who said Gregory Madison, real name: Anthony Broadwater, is not the man who raped the author of the book. This author publicized the case through her book, interviews and articles. Meanwhile, Anthony Broadwater served 19 years in prison for a crime linked to him using flawed evidence.

The book claims a pubic hair offered by Mr. Broadwater matches the pubic combed as part of the rape kit in 1981. According to the Syracuse investigator, that claim is a gross overstatement, which was echoed by a confidential source. The only similarity is this --- the pubic hair came from a black male, not necessarily Mr. Broadwater. In addition, the only successful identification the victim made of her attacker was at trial, when Mr. Broadwater was the only African-American in the courtroom. The victim was sexually assaulted by an African-American man.

The confidential source from the original prosecution team has indicated a serial rapist operated in the park where the victim was raped, who in fact, later raped the victim’s roommate. The confidential source also indicates he reached out to the victim several times regarding inaccuracies in her book, to which he received no response.

Mr. Broadwater has been out of prison for almost 20 years, and has tried to clear his name, but the cost associated with the effort has stopped him from being able to do so. Even though Mr. Broadwater, a former Marine, is no longer incarcerated, he is still a registered sex offender and as a result cannot find employment or rent an apartment or house, or even buy a house in certain subdivisions.

Sadly, Mr. Broadwater is not the only Black man who was convicted based in part on the erroneous eye witness testimony of a white woman. In a different time, this type of tragedy happened all too often. Please help provide justice for a man whom America’s judicial system failed.

Please help us in our fight to exonerate Anthony Broadwater, who was wrongfully convicted of this sexual assault 40 years ago. The money will be used to hire an attorney who will fight this battle on Anthony’s behalf.
