Rifat Kaya was born in a very small town in Turkey in 1993. He is one of six children of a farmer family. He chose a different path than his father and decided to study history. Since his small town did not have any options for higher education, he moved to a bigger city. But problems and difficulties never stopped following him. One day, an opportunity came about when someone told him about the amount of opportunity in the United States.
It was apparent that the United States is the land of equal opportunity. He thought that he never achieved anything but who knows, maybe this time will be the time his dreams will come true. Rifat was able to obtain his greencard in 2014. He moved to the States in 2015, filled with hopes and dreams. However, it was not as easy as he thought it would be. He barely spoke any English and for him, it was a culture shock.
Due to this, he started attending a language class to improve his English. Unfortunately, after six months, he had to discontinue the class because he eventually spent all his savings. Rifat decided to find a job. Most of the places that he applied to rejected him because of his English level. Finally, he found a job at a pizza shop. He worked 10 hours a day, at the same time studying English. For a year and a half, this became the day to day for Rifat, until the pizza shop decided to switch owners. Rifat was then again, out of a job.
He thought that this was a sign for him to go to electrical school to be an electrician. While in school, he started working at a barbershop part-time. He went to school for nine months and graduated. At the same time, Rifat started to feel weak and fatigued all the time. His body was not able to withstand working long hours. After a few months, he started to develop GI issues and abdominal pain. Even with these issues, Rifat chose to ignore the symptoms because he did not have health insurance.
One day, he found himself unable to move. He was also experiencing some GI bleeding, causing him to lose a significant amount of blood. Rifat decided to finally go to the ER. The doctors performed a variety of tests which confirmed that he has colon cancer.
After one week, Rifat underwent surgery that removed the tumor from his colon and will be undergoing chemotherapy for the following months. At this time, he is unable to work or do anything to really support himself. He has no family in the United States, except for a few friends. Rifat is a very hardworking guy and needs our love, care, and support to get back on his feet. He wants to see his fiancé living in Turkey and eventually get married. He wants to see the future. He wants to continue is a journey of fulfilling his dreams. Friends and family, let us help Rifat through this journey.
