Central Queensland jockey version of Bart Cummings, Mr Roy Mules (aka 'Butch') needs no introduction into the Australian Horse Racing Industry. He began his career before he even hit his teen years throughout many areas such as Mackay and Brisbane. From their he come past those winning posts first more times then he could ever imagine. If you take a step back in history or take a look at old racing results, Roy Mules is the name you'll see.
At age 58, Butch has been recently diagnosed with a Binomial Tumour which is the size of a tennis ball on the side of his neck. For the past couple of months he had been complaining about this lump which seemed to be getting bigger and bigger... Now for the past 4 weeks he has spent most his time at the Royal Brisbane Hospital.
This diagnosis has taken a great toll on his family and those who surround him closely. With his partner Peta, and two young children Lilly & Cienna at home in Barcaldine QLD and one, Zach, in Blackall about to graduate, this hurting family are trying to do their best to continue their everyday routines.
While being a full time devoted partner and father, till the day he went away Butch was still riding trackwork for my dad, Patrick O'Toole and working as the Local Post Delivery Man in Barcaldine.
For those who know this horse whispering, loving larrikin, know Butch as someone that would literally be riding horses till the day he died. Even with all the plates, screws and breaks from race falls.. He's always the one to call if a horse is running a muck, he always has the answer as to what is wrong or how to help the racehorses, he speaks to them in his own language and always busts out something like an old Charlie Pride song to them whenever he is with them. There are many who wish they had his special touch.. His children and horses are his world and you wouldn't find a man like him who would give his heart and soul to absolutely everything.
However, now on Thursday the 17th of October 2016, the day of his eldest son Zach Frosts Formal Graduation Day in Blackall, Butch will be laying for a 14 hour operation to try remove most of this tumour. Also during this procedure they will be removing half of his left ear and all of his teeth.
Doctors said he could walk away now and have at least 3 months to live or have the operation and go home to his family for at least 18 months. Although be expected to stay in intensive care for healing purposes before he can be let go home.. Butch always putting his family first, wants that little bit longer. And we pray to god that he proves the doctors wrong on their prediction!
Beginning Thursday & over the weekend, wherever you are at a horse event or family gathering, whether it be from Races to Rodeo, I would like to please ask that you wear something containing the colour blue and hashtag #ridingwithbutch to show the support we have for him and that we'll ride with him every step of the way!
Butch needs as much help as he can get to help support his family at home, his oldest son heading off to University next year and also to meet the massive hospital payments throughout his road to recovery. Please donate towards his fund, every little bit will go a long way.
