There are moments that change our lives forever, moments that shake our souls and teach us a lesson in humility that we will never forget.

My name is Lissett.

We met Jonathan at Fundación Ser Feliz several years ago in Guayaquil Ecuador, SouthAmerica. When he was just a baby, an aggressive retinoblastoma (infantile retina cancer) forced doctors to remove his eyes to save his life. Since he arrived at our foundation, Jonathan has lived in total physical darkness, but with an internal light that disarms anyone.

Three years ago, Jonathan surprised us all with a wish that seemed crazy to us: he wanted a bicycle. From our logical and fearful adult perspective, his request seemed impossible. As the president of the foundation, I doubted it deeply. I thought: "How is a child who is completely blind going to ride a bicycle? He is going to crash, he is going to get hurt." Out of fear and a desire to protect him, we didn't give it to him right away, and Jonathan cried.

But children teach us to see the world with the eyes of the heart. We decided to break through our own fears, trust his intuition, and hand over the bicycle. Days later, his mother sent us a video that left us speechless and with tears in our eyes: Jonathan was pedaling in the street—free, happy, guiding himself solely by his hearing, his instinct, and the voice of his mother, who from afar told him with infinite love: "Stop, move forward, go on, just up to there." Jonathan didn’t need to see the path with his eyes; he felt it in his soul. It was the greatest life lesson we have ever received at the foundation.

Behind Jonathan lies a very harsh family reality that needs our support. Due to a genetic incompatibility, his parents have lived a story of deep grief: they lost their first baby to this very same cancer; Jonathan is their second child and fought it by losing his sight; and their third child was born with an intellectual disability. This is a family that has given everything, but today they need a helping hand.

Today, we have set a goal of $2,400 USD to completely transform Jonathan's reality, and we want to achieve it through three pillars:

His New Bicycle: The bicycle we gave him three years ago is now way too small for him. We want to gift him a brand new one, matching his current size, strong and adapted so he can keep feeling that freedom he loves so much.

Annual Nutrition: Guaranteeing a full year of specialized nutritional supplements to keep his immune system strong and his health protected.

Room Remodeling: We want to fix up, paint, and adapt his bedroom to create a safe, comfortable, and hazard-free environment for him and his little brother with an intellectual disability, tailored to their special needs.

At Fundación Ser Feliz, we serve children battling cancer every single day, but cases like Jonathan's remind us why we exist.

He proved to us that no darkness can extinguish the desire to live, play, and ride. Just like Jonathan, we currently support 198 more cases of brave children fighting their own battles against cancer and its hardships.
