Ride to Awareness

Donation protected
The purpose of the ride is to raise awareness for National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and Mental Health America and about mental illnesses and to remove the stigma attached to having a mental illness.

My wife Lynn and I raised thousands of dollars for “Team to End AIDS,” riding from Chicago to Milwaukee. It was an incredibly rewarding experience. We both spent years in the Mental Health field as Mental Health Associates. Lynn was with Dorthea Dix Hospital and I was at the Oaks Treatment Center in the Canyon Boys Unit in Austin, Texas. I still have close friends in there and we will host an Art and Music bike ride event in Austin to benefit Ride to Awareness. We both consider the time we spend working in the mental health industry as some of the most important and fulfilling work of our lives.

If I achieve anything with the ride, it won’t be the miles spent on a bike but rather the funds we have raised and the light we shed on mental illness.

Nearly 60 million Americans experience a mental health condition every year. Regardless of race, age, religion or economic status, mental illness impacts the lives of at least one in four adults and one in 10 children across the United States.

People living with mental illness need help and hope; they need a community that supports them, their families and their recovery.

Mental illness is a medical condition that disrupts a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illnesses are medical conditions that often result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.

Serious mental illnesses include major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and borderline personality disorder. The good news about mental illness is that recovery is possible.

Mental illnesses can affect anyone. Mental illnesses are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character or poor upbringing. Mental illnesses are treatable. Most people diagnosed with a serious mental illness can experience relief from their symptoms by actively participating in an individual treatment plan.

We welcome your support and encourage you to give generously.
