'Ride London' for a Cure4DM-Canine Degenerative Myelopathy
Donation protected
This year will be my fifth 'Ride London' - 100 mile bike ride taking place on Sunday 26 May 2024 to support the
UK DM FUNDRAISERS and raise funds for treatments and a cure for canine DM.
This year is very exciting for us as we see the launch the UK based 'Cure4DM' Charity (reg. no. 1206120) set up by my wife, Kathryn Everson. With a super new UK Board and support from some members of the former US based, 'Finding the Cure for DM' foundation, it is the only UK charity dedicated to finding treatments and a cure for the terminal disease of Canine Degenerative Myelopathy. The charity spreads awareness about DM, supports owners with information and education about the disease and importantly raises funding for existing and new research where ever that may be, just as the former U.S based foundation did for over a decade. working towards an end to this heartbreaking, terminal disease that can affect so many of our beloved companions.
Having witnessed the effect of Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) in our own lives, after our beautiful GSD, Saxa developed it in 2013, we wanted to do as much as we could to help support others, so in 2016, the UK 'Wheels To Help Me', loan service came into existance. A fantastic service that loans out donated Dog Wheelchairs and other mobility aids to help owners of dogs with Degenerative Myelopathy who need them and those owners who may not be able to afford them. Shortly after, the 'UK DM Fundraisers' FB group' was set up to fund the UK Wheels to Help Me service, create more awareness and raise funds for DM research.
About DM-
DM is a degenerative spinal cord disease, usually affecting older dogs from the age of 8, similar to ALS and/or Primary Progressive MS in humans, characterised by progressive hind limb and eventual front limb paralysis, ultimately it is a fatal disease with devastating consequences for the dogs and very distressing for owners caring for them. DM itself though is not painful. With care, dedication and support many dogs can continue to have a good 'quality of life' for the time they have left, especially if they have mobility aids to support them.
Please help support my cause with whatever amount you can and Together we can make a difference !
