Ride for Beirut
Lebanese-American Dr. Lea Borgi has spent this summer of pandemic continuing to provide care for her patients in Boston.
But this Monday and Tuesday (Aug. 10 - 11), the kidney doctor will ride 137 miles for her home city of Beirut. The mile goal will require approximately 12 hours to complete and matches the number of people known to have died as a result of the explosion.
Already in the midst of total economic collapse, the people of Lebanon cannot expect an organized government response. Instead, NGOs are spearheading relief efforts in the area devastated by the blast. Founded in 1995, Offre Joie (The Joy of Giving) has mobilized more than six thousand citizen volunteers to clear the streets of Beirut for hospital access and essential supplies. The organization is also using donations to place the newly homeless.
