"Rico's Army" - Rainy day Fund
Kathy "Rico" Baichtal had a headache..then it was a baaaad headache. Then it was an "I don't want to go out" kind of headache. In hindsight...that should have triggered more concern.
Keeping in mind So Cal was having some unbelievable heat, the age of Ms. Rico, (sorry) and all of her back/forth treatments for her ankle injury, we all thought it was just a real doozy and would pass.
Cut to Labor Day weekend. Bryan finally insists that they go to E.R. Without time to digest the news or have any choices of treatment, it was
BRAIN SURGERY...STAT!
Kathy had a lime-sized gliobastoma tumor that had caused a mid-line brain shift of 16mm
To put that into perspective, if your brain goes off-center 5-8mm that is cause for immediate surgery. At 16mm - The Neuro team was in disbelief that she was even alive, nevermind that she was walking and talking.
Thankfully, the surgery was done at the new Kaiser Medical center, with a great Neurosurgeon. They took as much of the growth as they could without affecting her function, but their were still pieces, "fingers" of the tumor to contend with.
We all hoped and prayed a different answer would come back from pathology, but the dx was confirmed.
Kathy started her oral doses of chemo and 6 weeks of Radiation treatments in 10/21 .
She's been fortunate to not have that many bad days so far, and in true Rico fashion she is living life to it's fullest, but behind the smiles and getting out to be social, to have a "normal" feel/vibe for her and the family, we're all a bit worried about the LONG term/behind the scenes effects.
Bryan has been a rock of support, but with him missing work for appointments, and if this dang El nino does really get as bad as they say...who needs the additional stresses of financial burdens.
I've since come to find out that their whole heating system is on the fritz. NOT good timing.
I know there are family and friends who have already done so much, and how appreciative they are.
For those of you who cannot be at the fund-raiser, and who might just have just a little extra to help out, it could help the family with extra medical expenses and a
TRUE "rainy day fund" .
Thanks to everyone in advance for your help, support, thoughts and prayers.
Let's do what we can to help "Rico's Army" and the Baichtal bunch beat this thing!
