Rico was diagnosed with
Craniopharyngioma, a rare brain tumor.
Rico is an active 13-year old 7th grader attending Somerton Middle School. Beginning in 2018 Rico began to complain about pain in his head, specifically behind his left eye. After multiple visits to an Optometrist the Doctor determined he needed glasses and that his pain was from living in a hot and dry climate. He got glasses and started using eye drops on a regular basis, but the pain didn’t go away, it actually intensified.
One day he was at school, participating in sports, living a normal life later that same day he went completely blind in his left eye and was experiencing tunnel vision in his right eye. In the early morning of September 11, 2019 Rico, was airvacked by helicopter to Phoenix Children's Hospital. The Chief Neurosurgeon decided he needed emergency brain surgery that afternoon. Rico has been diagnosed with Craniopharyngioma, a rare brain tumor. It is located in a part of the brain that is too dangerous to remove the tumor, but it can be treated with radiation. The Chief Neurosurgeon referred to the tumor as being located in “prime real estate” in the brain. This specific type of tumor causes injury to several important glands/structures of the brain, specifically the optic nerve and pituitary gland. He was Already blind in his left eye, the Doctor was trying to save what little vision left he had in his right eye.
Rico is currently seeing 5 specialists: Neurologist, Ophthalmologist, Endocrinologist, Oncologist and the Mayo clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. Beginning October 28, 2019 Rico will be receiving Proton Beam Radiation M-F for 6 weeks, after the radiation he will continue to see Phoenix Specialist for years to come. Rico’s family lives in Somerton, Arizona where his father, Lenny Longoria, will stay to care for the other three children while Rico and his mother, Lucy (Lucia) Sanchez, will need to find a place to stay in the Phoenix area during his six weeks of radiation treatment.
if you are able to donate to this family during this difficult time it will relieve pressure and alleviate stress on the family. Your kind thoughts and generosity are greatly needed and appreciated at this time.
