Ricky is a father of 8 and a grandfather of 2 and husband.Only 40 years old. He was diganoised last june advanced localized rectum tumors,since then its been a long hard fight,hes gotten through chemo and radiation 33 treatments in kelowna and hour away from home and that didnt cure him,with multiple surgerys to drain abcess's due to tumors,and daily unpacking wound and packing which is so painful.Then surgery this last april 18th and removed intestine,bladder,bone and nerves which took 14 hours. The amazing team at VGH gave him a hope and a future by radical surgery and made a stoma from a intestine for his urine to go through,and has a ostomy
A muscle and skin was takin to help reconstruct his pelvic and a vac machine on his back flap to help heal wound that also has an infection in it,and he also got cdiff in intestine.
He has since been in respiratory arrest both times after surgery.Surgery on may 18th as well due to a blockage in intestine.And was on a respirator for 3 days and treated for phemonia in ICU witha collapsed lung due to blod clot in the lung,Hes currently 108 lbs. The Team is waiting until bowel is functioning proper so then he would be allowed to eat and drink.
He has 2 infections hes fighting off and his voice box has been temporarily damaged due to ventilaotor and tube down his nose to stomach. Ricky is in alot of pain when sitting to standing but this week was able to walk a hallway and struggles with deep breathing so O2 levels poor at times,He needs to walk and reposition and deep breath to help prevent another respiratory arrest.Hes deppressed and needs his wife by his side.
Ricky lives 5 hours away from VGH so the cost of gas and traveling and wife having to take time off work and all the equipment he needs,and ricky being on permanet disabilty now. The financial expectations on us to be able to get through this is overwhelming! Ricky you have fought hard an long and intensley this last year!
