Ladies and Gentlemen: Rick Taylor.
Anyone who's been a part of Seattle's comedy scene knows him. He's sharp, he's witty, he's insightful. He is unapologetically honest and thouroughly himself. On April 18th, we almost lost this man.
Rick suffered a massive heart attack that left him dead for a dark moment that Saturday afternoon. Yet he never lost his sense of humor. He collapsed after getting out of his car, he said, "in a public place and luckily a Good Samaritan (who specifically asked not to be identified) was able to give me CPR until EMT's arrived. I am very lucky. There was no loss of oxygen to my brain, so I will be just as weird as I have always been."
After being taken briefly to a hospital where no one understood a man could have a husband, Rick was transferred to Swedish- Cherry Hil and treated for Pneumonia, which had to be cleared up before undergoing heart surgery. His husband Chris and a few good friends can verify that Rick was in excelllent spirits throughout his stay, just trying not to be "the asshole" in the Cardiac unit. He was thrilled to be alive. And to finally have time to make puns on Twitter.
All told, after 10 days in the hospital and a triple bypass sergery, Rick and Chris were billed with about $300,000 in medical expenses. Thank Kanye or Obama or Rick's work or whomever, but insurance covered the vast majority of these costs. However, Rick and Chris are still saddled with almost $10,000 in medical bills. This is an insane burden for these two men and their cats to bear alone.
I am writing on Rick's behalf to you beautiful humans that have benefitted from Rick's generosity- his countless hours running open mics, booking and producing shows and competitions, piecing together beautiful soundbytes on PunchPod- if every one of us pitched in 5 bucks, this burden could be significantly lifted for these amazing guys. Rick is someone who makes our community great, and never asks anything in return. Please consider lending a hand to this amazing man in his time of need.
Rick: I'm so glad you're still with us. Don't scare me like that again, buddy.
