On August 16, 2018, Richard Hardesty was in a motorcycle accident. The doctors told him that he sustained 11 breaks in 7 ribs, a concussion, and some road rash. The road to recovery began with physical therapy and 4 weeks of rest. After following doctor's orders, he was able to finally return to work with restrictions as his strength was returning.
On October 1st, his wife retired and her only form of income now is social security.
On October 9th, a damaging storm tore through their neighborhood. This destroyed at least 11 large trees, several bushes, their roof, their solar panels, a building on their property, ripped power lines out of their house, damaged vehicles, etc. They were left without power for several days and thousands of dollars in damage.
He then had to undergo a job change. This meant no insurance, except for paying for COBRA until his new insurance would come into effect 90 days later.
Unfortunately, during all this time, he felt there was something else wrong as his ability to breathe was declining. He attempted to return to the doctor, but was unable to be scheduled for further diagnostics until November 6th, 2018. During this time, he became more winded walking or climbing stairs, and even almost passed out after hurrying up 3 flights of stairs for an emergency at work.
Once he was able to have x-rays and a CAT scan, they found out he has been dealing with an unknown internal leakage from wounds caused by the accident. This leakage has now solidified to a gel-like form that is pushing up against his lungs the point he has less than 50% of his left lung able to function. He will require surgery in order to have this removed. After surgery, he will require 4-6 weeks off work in order to recover and hopefully heal, assuming this is the last step to fully heal. This will mean no income for him other than his wife's social security.
This has been a very trying time, both financially and emotionally, and is still continuing. Medical bills and bills for repairing their destroyed home are still accruing. We are asking for any help, no matter how small, to get through this time.
