Rick passed away peacefully yesterday morning with his loved ones near. Galen wrote a beautiful tribute to him on the Caring Bridge  site which I will post below. Please feel free to visit that site to read and share memories of Rick.  Love to you all.

Morning family.

Today, a little after 8am Rick passed peacefully.

We each got to spend some time with him individually to say our goodbyes, and now his soul can raft, skate and snowboard forever to his favorite Johnny Sketch song.

He can eat as many fists full of foie gras as he pleases. Not to mention, bacon, avocados, butter, Central Grocery's muffulettas, any item potentially on a charcuterie, rib eyes, Amy's lumpia, Adolpho's tres leche, mostly any taco but especially fish, hibiscus and thai iced tea, everything dim sum, Benny's blood sausage mac n cheese, oysters, Cindy's adobo, In n Out, Vito's molten lava choclate cake, my Guiness braised short ribs, tartare, bacon fat......Really we could fill a book, and it seems ridiculous to not spend a third of this talking about his favorites. Food was one of his greatest loves, and all of our best memories had a constant backdrop of kick-ass food and wonderful people.

I know to some 49 is young, but he really packed in 82 years worth of life into those 49. He could dance his face off, where a costume better than many and tell jokes in even the darkest hours. Life was better outdoors, whether it be on the river or through the trees on a snowboard. He loved to remind everyone to live every minute to the fullest, and definitely passed that gluttony on to Silas and Dashielle. Not many kids are lucky enough to get sick of camping and skiing.

I am certain that his heart belongs in New Orleans.

Thank you Rick for all the laughs.

Thank you all for being a part of his life. He loves you.

------------

As many of you know, on May 7th Rick collapsed and lost consciousness while visiting friends in New Orleans.

He was transported to the hospital, where a CT scan revealed that he had suffered a subdural hematoma. He underwent an emergency craniotomy and a second open brain surgery to control the bleeding and reduce the pressure. Rick remains in a coma in New Orleans.

Galen, Dashielle, Silas and Rick’s mom Cindy flew to New Orleans last week to be with Rick, and they intend to stay with him for the duration of his time in the hospital. They have met his medical team and feel that he is in excellent hands. However, there are still a lot of unknowns, and all we can do now is wait and see how Rick heals.

As this situation has developed, it has become clear that financial support for Galen and the kids is needed. They will be going back and forth to New Orleans in the coming months. They will need funds to cover travel expenses (multiple trips between Portland and New Orleans), lodging (while in New Orleans), Galen’s lost wages, and general living expenses and expenses we can’t predict.

This GoFundMe covers expenses for Rick's family for the next two months. The hope is to get them set up enough that financial insecurity is off the table during an already unbelievably difficult time. If it becomes necessary to raise funds for Rick’s medical bills, we may renew or update this effort.

Please continue to check-in at the Caring Bridge site or here for updates on how Rick is doing.

Thank you all for your love and support.
